Landscape Lighting
Our new exterior lighting plan aims to solve a historic problem: making the campus feel welcoming and safe at night without the harsh glare and "prison yard" effect of the existing post lanterns. The objective is to prioritize comfort, wayfinding, and the beauty of our grounds while keeping fixtures discreet.
A THREE-LAYERED APPROACH
To ensure safety and aesthetics are maintained year-round - even when trees are in full bloom - the plan moves away from a single light source in favor of a layered approach:
The Canopy Layer: Where rooftop angles cannot reach, particularly under dense tree canopies, we will supplement the moonlighting with low-profile downlights mounted within the trees using adjustable straps that protect tree health.
The Aesthetic Layer: To celebrate our property’s greatest asset, carefully placed uplights will reveal the structure of our mature trees and highlight hedges and low walls. This creates a memorable nighttime identity visible from both the sidewalk and the apartments above.
The Wayfinding Layer: Subtle lighting will be integrated into entrance steps and curbs to make building entries easy to spot. In the few backyard paths where neither rooftop nor tree lighting is feasible, low, durable bollards will be installed to direct light downward to the walking surface without creating glare.
REMOVING CLUTTER
This comprehensive system allows us to remove the majority of the existing light poles in front of the residential buildings. By eliminating these visual obstructions, we declutter the landscape and allow the natural beauty of the grounds to take center stage.
